A deep dive into Gin's Key Ingredient: Juniper
Juniper Gin - Juniper Dry Gin
Many people ask what is Juniper Dry Gin? Or why is it that we call one of our products "Juniper Dry Gin".
At the heart of any true gin lies Juniper! By definition, Juniper Gin, often referred to as "Gin", is a distilled spirit where juniper berries are the primary flavoring component. The small, piney "berry" (more on that later) is responsible for the distinct taste we associate with traditional gin - that woody, piney, earthy and fresh herbal profile that sets gin apart from other spirits like vodka or rum.
Juniper berries (Juniperus communis), which come from the Juniperus genus of plants, are not actually berries in the botanical sense but tiny, fleshy cones. Picture a dried-up blueberry for size.
They are rich in aromatic compounds like α-pinene, β-Myrcene, β- pinene and limonene which provide that unique and powerful gin flavour.
The reason we called our Juniper Dry Gin "Juniper Dry Gin"
is because it is all about Juniper!
We wanted to let the Juniper shine and be the predominant flavour, subtly complemented by its other ingredients.
A gin which has the predominant flavour of Juniper is also known as a
London Dry Gin and must meet other requirements such all components must be distilled (Ingredients cannot be added post distillation) and definitely there can be no sugars etc added. We don't add any sugars or artificial ingredients to any of our gins, ever, but some do so take note.
Our Juniper Dry Gin is a perfect example of a Classic London Dry Gin and in true testament of this we were incredibly awarded with the Trophy for Best Classic Dry Gin in the 2023 Australian Gin Awards just 9 months after our official launch. This was such an amazing achievement and highlight of our first year, and one that we are very, very proud of!
Our Juniper Dry Gin is a bold gin, definitely all about Juniper, and sitting at a cheeky 48% ABV it makes a mean Dirty Martini or delicious Gin and Tonic.
If you a Classic London Dry Gin fan, do yourself a favor and order a bottle ASAP. You are in for a treat.
Many gins today including our Sydney Dry Gin are more contemporary in style, which means that while they still contain Juniper, the other botanicals such as citrus and spice, herbs or florals are also allowed to shine and stand out in addition to the Juniper.
Its super important here for the chosen botanicals to both complement and be balanced against the Juniper.
We are often asked which of our two gins do we like best?
Juniper Dry Gin
or
Sydney Dry Gin
The answer is we love both. They are completely different gins.
Both make a mean Gin and Tonic.
Sydney Dry Gin is a contemporary style citrus gin and there is nothing better on a hot day to have a G&T with this using Fever Tree Mediterranean Tonic and a wedge of Ruby Grapefruit. Delicious.
Juniper Dry Gin is a classic London Dry Gin, perfect for a bolder G&T or a delectable Dirty Martini.
My suggestion? By both and alternate. You can't go wrong as between these two gins we are tallying up at over 20 medals in our first 2 years, with many many golds and a trophy !
